It was the windy conditions that dominated
this game rather than either team. Redditch played well against the wind
and slope creating a number of chances but failing to put any away.
Redditch United Women were fortunate however to remain level when a good
strike from the Hopwood Star forward was pushed away by the strong hands
from the Reds keeper. Generally the game was a scrappy affair with
little passing football although there was a good deal of effort.
The second half saw Redditch control for
most of it opening the scoring with a shot from distance that got away
from the Star goalkeeper. Undaunted though Hopwood attacked strongly and
a good cross flew straight across the Reds 6 yard line, this was
recovered and in the second period of play a strong shot could only be
parried by the Redditch goalkeeper and with several Redditch players
ball watching the Star forward smashed the ball in to the net.
Redditch had to lift themselves again and
were awarded a penalty for handball. Stanley stepped up and cruelly shot
wide of the goal! However 5 minutes later she made amends when she
slotted past the oncoming keeper when one to one. Lingham finally got
off the mark with a nice finish whilst Smith added to her seasons total
with good football making space for a simple shot into the net.
Although not the best performance of the
season the result was well deserved and just reward for the squads
efforts thus far. Elaine Frampton debut was an effective one with a
solid midfield performance. |
