Both teams started in sombre mood but it
looked more likely that Redditch would get the opener if one came, this
wasn't the case. Poor defending allowed a cross from the left to be
tapped in unopposed as the Ellie Hopkins and Kirsty Grigg looked on.
This in other games would have sparked the Reds into life but not in
this game. The closest Redditch came to scoring was when Lauren Jack
fired in to consecutive shots only to have them both saved by the Town's
keeper. Redditch's supply to forwards or from crosses were always to
straight and too near the keeper to cause any real threat.
The second half started brightly with Jess
Lingham attacking down the right and firing a shot that the keeper
couldn't reach but hit the top of the bar. The Reds continued to press
and another shot from Lingham this time went over the keeper and into
the net. Redditch applied more pressure but were undone when lack lustre
defending again saw the Rugby centre forward collect the ball 23 yards
out and central to the goal and a firmly struck shot gave Grigg no
chance. Rugby increased their lead further when Redditch again failed to
clear the ball. The Redditch defence was uncharacteristically out
muscled and neat passing from Rugby caused problems. That said Redditch
allowed their visitors too much time to pick their passes.
As the game was moving in to the last
quarter Elaine Frampton got in front of her defender and headed the ball
towards goal, the Town's keeper tried her best but just failed to stop
it going over her in to the net. Redditch them went for broke in the
last few minutes with both full backs being replaced. It looked like the
gamble was going to pay off when Rugby was penalised for a picked up
back pass , despite the free kick being slow to be taken the resulting
shot was headed of the line, in the play that followed a Redditch shot
hit the post and Rugby had held out for what a win which seemed unlikely
at the games start.
Overall a disappointing performance by Redditch who can and have played
much better this season |
