Redditch started the game in a busier way
than when the teams last met but neither team secured the upper hand.
Rugby playing neat football never really threatened early on and the
deadlock was only broken when a tentative lobbed shot at goal from
Hannah Patrick (Paddie) was misjudged by the goalkeeper who was beaten
by the bounce. Rugby then began to apply more pressure and had some
chances which the Reds defence and Kirsty Grigg in goal were able to
contain. Redditch had few other opportunities in the first period but
remained competitive until halftime.
Redditch have has their fair share of
injuries over the last few weeks and carried some of them into today's
game, Natalie Leroux recovering from sprained ankle ligaments came on
for the injured Laura Tilley at half time, earlier than was planned and
Redditch again had to switch formation. This gave the hosts a little
more to think about on their right defence and created space across
their back four which Jess Ligham took advantage of to score the Reds
second with 10 minutes gone.
Kellie Smith moved to left back and take
command of this side of defence, whilst Christy Thomas and Beth Ralley
both covered the right back position with the former moving in to
midfield when Paddie was substituted. Rugby pressed Redditch hard and
were eventually rewarded with a goal when the ball was failed to be
cleared following a corner. Other chances came Rugby's way but a
combination of poor finishing and fine goalkeeping from Grigg, they were
unable to convert any.
Redditch continued to have chances of
their own and a shot from Christy Thomas that didn't look like it had
the legs to beat the Rugby keeper managed to squirm it's way passed her
in to the net for what is Christys' very first competitive goal in 6
years of playing football.
The team deserved the result given the
challenges thrown their way with injuries and sickness, at least with
the Easter break it will give time for players to recover and make
selection for the manager all the more difficult. |
