Redditch rode their fortune in the early
opening encounters in a game against a team from the lower division as
Coventry again demonstrated that their league is probably stronger than
the Premier. Having much of the possession Coventry came across a
Redditch defence that was nervy and out of sorts.
Only brilliant goalkeeping from Kirsty
Grigg, including a double goal line save kept the score level and turned
out to be a stroke of good luck that allowed the visitors to break and
score the first goal, which was just reward for their endeavours and
this was how the half finished.
Redditch began the second period in a
totally different frame of mind and a fierce shot from Perkins brought
the score level. The Reds then went ahead from a Lingham finish after
good build up work. Helen Roberts saw afree kick elude the goalkeeper
only for a goal line clearance that seemed unlikely.
This lifted Coventry's spirits and from a
needless free kick which saw Redditch lose concentration the Redditch
defence got the wrong side of the Coventry attack and a one on one with
Grigg saw the ball fired passed her into the net.
The third goal was one of those things,
Grigg again made fine stop but couldn't quite hang on to the ball and
the Coventry attacker quick thinking, back heeled the ball in to the net
from almost 18 yards with the Redditch defender just not being able to
catch up with it before the goal line.
Coventry then killed off the goal as
Redditch pushed on to try and get back on level terms. Overall a good
game with a fair result as Coventry did have the most clear cut
chances. |
