Redditch started well and had the better of
the possession opening early chances with the best being squandered when
Jess Stanley managed to head the ball over the ball when virtually on
Southams goal line.
The host keeper then made the first of a
number of fines saves when a strong left hand pushed the balled round
the post from a Jess Lingham power blaster. Redditch conceded the first
goal when the ball was turned in to the net for an own goal from Kellie
Smith, who felt she had been pushed during her attempt to clear the ball
from a corner.
Southam second came when the ball was lost
in midfield and Toni McQuaid misjudged her position allowing the Southam
striker to hit a fierce shot over Kirsty Grigg in the Redditch goal.
Between these goals Redditch were very unlucky not to equalise when a
sharp turn and shot from Elaine Frampton hit the inside of the post and
across the goal line before being cleared and Smith saw a volley from a
corner swerve wide of the goal by a matte r of inches.
The game was still within reach and
Redditch opened the second period in confident mood only to fail to
clear the ball decisively allowing the Southam forward a run and shot
one on one with Grigg, whose fine save appeared to have seen the
opportunity gone but Southam responded quicker than any of the Reds
defence and shot this time wide of the recovering Grigg.
Redditch continued to press and a shot from
the half way line saw the Southam keeper scurrying back to her goal and
making a superb save pushing the ball over. Other saves were made from
Laura Perkins, Frampton and Leroux.
Overall Redditch were unlucky to come away
with nothing having by far the more chances and equal possession,
however Southam showed that when chances do come you was to be
successful they have to be taken.
