In what feels like a marathon of a season
Redditch's last game proved a bit of a rollercoaster. The Reds started
in fantastic style crafting a simply through ball for Lingham to run
onto and pass into the net past the Solihull keeper.
Other chances came Redditch's way, a deft
lob from Lingham saw the ball clear the keeper but bounce off the hard
pitch just over the bar, other shots either just went wide or hit
towards the keeper who was able to gather.
It wasn't long though before Leroux picked
up the ball and cutting in from the left fired over the keeper in to the
net. At this point it seemed that Redditch may go on to win the game
comfortably but despite still creating more chance were unable to add
any more to their total before the break. Solihull also created a few
chances seeing their shots going wide of the mark.
The second half Redditch again had the
upper hand although the game had lost some of it's structure and
Solihull were unfortunate not to score when Grigg was beaten but Elaine
Frampton pulled off a super goal line clearance. Motivated by this
Solihull continued to press and were rewarded with a goal.
The re-arranged defence never appeared
settled and changes made to try and get all players to have an
involvement obviously had an affect, however Redditch still missed
several clear cut chances to settle the game, however this was to be as
a result of a handball by a Solihull defender and the resultant penalty
was hammered home by Perkins.
It then looked like the fight had gone out
of Solihull but Redditch were their own worst enemies again and poor
control in midfield allowed Solihull to regain possession and breakaway,
then half hearted defending allowed the Solihull striker to turn and run
towards goal resulting in a good strike that was to go for Grigg to get
to. Redditch still had time to miss two further golden opportunities to
score before the final whistle rounded off a disappointing second half
but with the prize of finishing at least a creditable fifth in the
league in their first year in the Premier Division.
All players should be proud of their
achievements this season which saw the value of having depth to the
squad. Only one player played in all games and with the rules changing
next season back to straight substitutions, removing the roll on / roll
off option, the importance of having available players who are fit will
be all the more important.
Thanks also go to all those families,
friends and other players who have come and supported the team over the
season. Hope to see you again next year, and to the Club's Committee as
without their efforts the Club would not be run.
