In their
second pre-season friendly progression was again evident as the women
worked well against their opposition from a higher league. Missing some
regular older players the Reds began with a younger feel particularly in
midfield and up front, with Grace Concannon starting an Open age game
for the first time. After some initial nerves the team settled down and
an even 25 minutes saw both team have but were unable to convert
opportunities, the Reds coming closest when hitting the post.
As lack
week the Manager decided to make changes on mass and during the first
five minutes of the this change Knowle took advantage and scored twice.
The game then settled down and half time was reached with no further
score although again Redditch had failed to capitalise on more chances
that came their way. The second half saw more chances in both personnel
and positions, the team copied well with these and overall was competing
in all areas with Knowle.
Both
defences came under some period of pressure but neither team looked as
if they were to score until the ball was played through to Concannon who
was adjudged by the referee to be on-side and calmly passed the ball
past the on coming keeper into the corner of the net. Katrina Schultze
who was also making her Redditch debut began to settle into her game and
showed that although not in her usual goalkeeper position she had desire
and work rate to be influential. In an unfortunate incident a Knowle
player injured herself, thought at the time to e a possible broken ankle
but turned out after hospitalisation to be very badly twisted and
sprained, this lead to a imposed delay in the game which Knowle came out
of better scoring 2 further goals in the last 10 minutes.
The
result itself did not do justice to the way Redditch played and given a
more stable side the result would have been much closer. Next game sees
Redditch meet Tipton Ladies, again at The Abbey Stadium
