The game started in the worst
possible way with Atherstone scoring immediately from the
kick off without Redditch even touching the ball. In in
fifteen minutes it was 3-0 and it looked like Atherstone
were going to humiliate their visitors fully.
However Redditch started to get involved in the game and were rewarded a
free kick some 35 yards out. Perkins hit a perfect shot above the
Atherstone keeper and at least some of the embarrassment was lifted.
Redditch began to put some play together and scored a second when
Perkins broke through and squared for Kerry Badger, who looked
suspiciously offside to slide in to the net, however the referee and his
assistant saw nothing wrong and the goal stood. Atherstone were knocked
off their play for a while and another free kick despatched by Perkins
saw the scores levelled.
The game then moved in to a more settled spell until an unfortunate
deflection fell kindly for the Atherstone striker to shot wide of Grigg
in goal to regain the lead. A fifth was added before half time when a
player was allowed to run from the edge of the penalty box and
unchallenged head in from a well taken corner.
The second half saw both team squander good opportunities with the only
score coming from another ball straight down the middle of the pitch
found the Atherstone forward unmarked and with her long stride outpace a
tiring Redditch defence.
Overall a disappointing performance but the youngsters on show gained
valuable experience which will hold them in good stead for the future
