Redditch
started this game with determination and spirit against a mature
Atherstone team who in previous seasons have always had the edge and had
a number of attacks resulting in close scoring opportunities, the
closest being when Natalie Leroux hit the post after pouncing on a loose
ball and rounding the keeper.
Atherstone best chances came from corners but the Reds dealt with most
well and it was Leroux who opened the scoring with another opportunist
chance but this time she rounded the keeper and passed the ball in to
the net. Kellie Smith added a second following another Reds attack
before Sam Cohen and Jess Lingham both had chances to add to the score
but saw their shots stopped by the visiting keeper.
Redditch made a number of
chances and this allowed Atherstone to get a foothold in the game and
they started the second half the more eager and focused team. Redditch
couldn't get to grips and conceded after a fine shot from a corner that
Redditch failed to clear or close down quickly enough.
The game then came in the
balance with Atherstone having the better of the play, however
Redditch's overall fitness told and in the last 20 minutes they started
to get the control back and Smith collected a ball in the last third and
made her way to the goal line before cutting back in from left and
firing past the keeper to make the game safe.
Redditch then continued to
press for the last 15 minutes but couldn't add to their tally. Overall a
strong and pleasing performance from the home team but improvement can
still be made in parts of their game
.
