People often
wonder why our Club logo contains what seem to be sewing needles, there
is a history behind this and they are actually needles. When the club
was looking for a logo that could be associated with Redditch a young
artist who had won both school competitions and also a national drawing
competition for PG Tips was requested to come up with a suitable idea.
Matthew Nickless who is the son of the Club's first
secretary came up with three designs. The one chosen and now
sported on all Club official merchandise and letter heads
consisted of a ball with cross needles and of course RUGFC.
Matthew meanwhile has now moved on and is now at University.
Redditch and the surrounding area are
world famous for making springs and needles and supplies businesses as broad as
the car to fishing industry.
Redditch itself has a history dating
back to the 13th century, with a Benedictine Abbey at Bordesley. The Forge Mill
museum contains the history of needle making and the importance of this to the
establishment and wealth of the town.
Redditch's most famous name is that of
Royal Enfield, who particularly during the war years produced the famous motor
cycles for the British Army. And of course for those of us old enough to
remember before the age of the 'Young Ones' and 'Alan Ba'stard' Redditch gave
birth to 'Kevin Turvey', aka Rik Mayall.
Modern industries include high tech
computer based firms as well as traditional light engineering companies and with
an expanding Town Centre Redditch boasts one of the best indoor shopping malls
in the region |
