Matthew Nickless who is the son of the Club's first secretary came up with three designs. The one chosen and now sported on all Club official merchandise and letter heads consisted of a ball with cross needles and of course RUGFC. Matthew meanwhile has now moved on and is now at University.
Redditch and the surrounding area are world famous for making springs and needles and supplies businesses as broad as the car to fishing industry.
Redditch itself has a history dating back to the 13th century, with a Benedictine Abbey at Bordesley. The Forge Mill museum contains the history of needle making and the importance of this to the establishment and wealth of the town.
Redditch's most famous name is that of Royal Enfield, who particularly during the war years produced the famous motor cycles for the British Army. And of course for those of us old enough to remember before the age of the 'Young Ones' and 'Alan Ba'stard' Redditch gave birth to 'Kevin Turvey', aka Rik Mayall.
Modern industries include high tech computer based firms as well as traditional light engineering companies and with an expanding Town Centre Redditch boasts one of the best indoor shopping malls in the region
